Choosing the Right Level of Abrasion for Surface Prep

Equipment Cleaning - Dry Ice Blasting

Every coating failure has a cause, and more often than not the cause was decided before a drop of paint was applied. Surface preparation is the part of a painting project that determines whether the coating lasts, and the central decision is how aggressive to be.

From most abrasive to least

We work through a range of methods, and the aim is always to use the least abrasive one that will actually do the job:

  • Needle gun. Needles impact the substrate to remove rust, mill scale and old paint from metal. The most aggressive option we use, and the right one for heavy corrosion.
  • Rotary scaling. A powerful electric machine that cleans, keys and prepares interior and exterior walls for refurbishment.
  • Dry ice blasting. Non-abrasive and residue-free, for surfaces that need cleaning rather than profiling.
  • Pressure washing. For contamination that water under pressure will release.
  • Wet washing. Water and cleaning solutions, for lighter soils and more sensitive surfaces.
  • Hand cleaning. The least abrasive, and the right answer more often than people expect.

Why more aggressive is not better

Over-preparing a surface costs money twice. It removes sound material that did not need removing, and on thin or older substrates it can leave a profile that the specified coating was never designed to sit on. The goal is a clean, sound, correctly keyed surface, not the maximum amount of material removed.

Deciding on site

Which method fits depends on the substrate, the existing coating, the environment the surface lives in and what is going on top. That judgment is made during the pre-inspection, before anything is scheduled.

Jim Automated Pet Care Products, LLC Auburn Hills, MI

"We had an audit coming up and we really wanted to make sure our facility was clean and ready. Recoveron was able to fit us into their schedule with little notice. Mark the Project Manager and his team were friendly and easy to work with. His team worked with us to make sure the equipment was cleaned properly and up to our companies standard. If we had any issues, which was were very few they took care of it right away. We will be working with Recoveron again in the future and possibly setting up a routine cleaning schedule."

Nathan Novolex Sheilds Shawano, WI

"Recoveron delivered as promised. They were professional efficient and on time."

Ray Kwik Trip La Crosse, WI

"It is obvious the crew takes pride in their work. Arrived on time, did a great job, and finished in the estimated time given on a tight timeline."

Ben McDonald Services Green Bay, WI

"Recoveron has been with us through AIB certification to becoming SQF certified. They do pre-inspections to determine the scope of work and provide on-sight documentation. Once the work is completed, they furnish the needed information for inspections.

For the past six years, they have provided plant cleaning and coatings for our Wisconsin facility and now are working at our Minnesota location. Recoveron is a knowledgeable and reliable resource that I would recommend to any manufacturer!"

Brandon N.E.W. Plastics Corp. Minneapolis, MN

"We had some heavy dust/oil build-up on our Fresh Air intakes and Exhaust fans at the 30-foot ceiling left. Recoveron came in, blocked off the area, brushed and vacuumed the areas, and cleaned the floors when done.

Their group cleaned and painted a control room exterior and even cleaned and painted a workstation and safety barrier. They look very good.

Part of the group worked on the back wall behind the machinery, brushing and vacuuming it, making it look 100% better.
Thank you very much."

Charles Great Northern Corporation Appleton, WI

"The Recoveron team was very responsive and quick to action. On multiple occasions, I've reached out to them for support and Andy has gotten back to me within hours. I look forward to working with them in the future."

Isabel Plenty Unlimited Inc San Francisco, California

"We had a great experience with Recoveron. They were very knowledgeable and completed quality work within the timeline that they provided to us."

Carl Alwin Manufacturing Ashwaubenon, WI

"Our 30+-year-old machining company was in dire need of professional cleaning, especially after the installation of 3 new large boring mills and an open house just around the corner! The walls and floor were covered in layers of grease, oil, and coolant. I had several local cleaners in to review and quote the project…. all declined; it was outside of their capability, and they wouldn't touch it.

After calling Recoveron, I could sense they had seen it all before. Their team came out to review and quote the project….. didn't even blink an eye… they could do the job, NO PROBLEM! Plus, they would work during the Off Shift so that we could continue to produce product for our customers. They coordinated the lifts and equipment, and the crew went to work over ten days, meeting with the shop foreman daily to coordinate a plan each night and setting the direction for ease and efficiency for both Recoveron and Lighting Machine. The crew was respectful, detailed, and systematic and took pride in their work; they treated our machine shop as if it were their own home.

The project cost was fair and reasonable, and we intend to engage Recoveron regularly to keep the shop in Tip-Top shape. I have already recommended other companies in our industry to give them a call!
It has been a delight to work with Recoveron; the results are dramatic and far exceeded our expectations!"
