The Dust Questions in an SQF, BRC or GFSI Audit

Housekeeping is one of those audit areas that feels subjective until you are standing under a beam with an auditor pointing a flashlight at it. Dust collection is integral to meeting SQF, BRC, GFSI and OSHA standards, and the findings that come out of it are rarely a surprise to anyone who works in the building.

Where auditors look first

Consistently, the same places. They are the places that are hard to reach, which is precisely why they are worth checking:

  • Overhead steel. Beams, trusses, girders and rafters, where dust accumulates for years unnoticed.
  • Ductwork and pipe runs. The horizontal surfaces on top, not the sides anyone can see.
  • Light fittings and fans. Both collect dust and both move air over it.
  • Ceiling plenums. Out of sight entirely, which is the point.
  • The tops of equipment. Cleaned at eye level, ignored above it.
  • High window sills and racking. Especially in warehouse and storage areas.

A plant that cleans its floors daily and has never had anyone above ten feet will fail on all of these at once.

What the standards actually ask for

Different schemes word it differently, but the expectation is the same: that the facility has a cleaning program, that it covers the whole building rather than the visible parts, that it is followed, and that there is evidence it is followed. The last part is where most plants fall short. Doing the cleaning and being able to prove you did it are two separate requirements.

Documentation is half the answer

Ask any contractor what you get afterwards. Pre and post inspection records showing the condition before and after are evidence of scheduled cleaning, and they are what turns “we clean the overhead annually” into something an auditor can accept.

Keep them somewhere the quality team can find them under pressure, not in a folder on the maintenance manager’s desk.

How far ahead to schedule

If your audit is announced, plan the overhead and dust work for several weeks beforehand rather than the week of. That gives time to deal with anything the cleaning uncovers, and it avoids a freshly disturbed building on the day.

If your audits are unannounced, which is increasingly the norm, the only workable answer is a schedule matched to how fast your process generates dust, so the building is never more than one cycle away from being ready.

If the audit is next week

It is not too late to improve the position, but be realistic about scope. Prioritize the overhead areas above production, the equipment tops, and anything directly above open product. A focused pass on the areas that will be looked at first is worth more than a light pass over the whole building.

Our technicians are trained, experienced and certified with a lift, which is what makes the high and hard-to-reach areas reachable in the time available.

"Having the same lead people has helped keep the quality of the work repeatable each time we schedule cleaning. Knowing they understand how we want the work to be accomplished and where they need to be is nice, and it makes managing the overall site work much easier on a busy down day. Safety awareness is very good. We do not allow a contractor to work in our facility that does not always take safety first."

"After getting quotes from a few other companies, I chose Recoveron to perform cleaning of the ceilings, trusses, exposed piping, and walls in our production areas. We also needed additional cleaning performed around a printing press, which involved cleaning dust, chemicals, oils, and solvents. We had not cleaned these surfaces in years, and the build-up was quite heavy in some areas. Our facility has an upcoming audit scheduled for SQF certification, and it was very apparent that Andy knew exactly what needed to be done to pass the audit.

The crew arrived on time each day and did a fantastic job! They had to maneuver around many pallets and areas with little clearance. Watching the workers as they drove the boom lifts, it was evident that they were fully trained, took every safety precaution, and knew what they were doing. They never complained; they just adapted to the situation. There was clear communication between myself and the project manager, and the crew lead did a walk-thru with me at the start of each shift to ensure things were being done to my satisfaction. The price was reasonable for the magnitude of work we needed, and I am completely happy with the outcome. I would definitely recommend Recoveron!"

Patti Color Ink Sussex, WI

"Our facility was recovering from an industrial fire. Recoveron worked as a key contributor in bringing the facility back to its prior state before the fire.
Recoveron tackled multiple areas with prep work and painting showing great flexibility in moving from job to job as restoration work progressed.
The crew and supervisor were excellent to work with and very responsive to changes as work progressed.
Highly recommend Recoveron! Great people and great work!"

David Resolute dba Fibrek, Menominee Pulp Mill Menominee, MI

"I was very satisfied with the job that was done from Recoveron. The crew stayed busy I didn't have to watch over them like I have in the past with other companies. The last day they were here it was close to quitting time for the guys and I told then they could leave but they insisted on doing another job I had on my list before they did. I was really impressed by this and I will defiantly be using Recoveron again."

Anthony Suominen Green Bay, WI

"Mark,

I want to thank you and your team on this year’s BRC cleaning project for our ******* and ******* plants. Gabe managed the project very well and during our BRC audit last week the auditor noted how clean the facility was.

"Recoveron has been with us through AIB certification to becoming SQF certified. They do pre-inspections to determine the scope of work and provide on-sight documentation. Once the work is completed, they furnish the needed information for inspections.

For the past six years, they have provided plant cleaning and coatings for our Wisconsin facility and now are working at our Minnesota location. Recoveron is a knowledgeable and reliable resource that I would recommend to any manufacturer!"
