Epoxy, Polyurethane and Polyaspartic Explained

Ask three contractors for an epoxy floor and you may get three different systems, all correctly described as epoxy. The word has become a generic term for many types of resin flooring, which makes it almost useless for comparing quotes.

What epoxy actually is

Strictly, epoxy is the fully cured result of two components or resins that have been mixed. It has been used for many years and is known for its adhesive qualities, which is the property that matters most in flooring.

In a floor system it turns up in three distinct roles:

  • Crack repair, filling and bridging defects in the slab
  • Primer systems, bonding the build-up to the concrete
  • Final top coats for floors and surfaces

It can be clear or supplied in a wide assortment of colors, which is why it reads as a decorative product when it is mostly a structural one.

Solids content

An epoxy primer coat can be solids-based or water-based. For thicker applications, 100 percent solids epoxy is usually the suitable choice, because it cures fast and gives absolute strength. Lower solids products have their place, generally where penetration into the slab matters more than film build.

This is worth asking about, because two quotes both saying “epoxy primer” can mean very different products.

Where polyurethane and polyaspartic come in

Epoxies are often used as the bond coat for subsequent top coats, either of similar material or of something with higher abrasion and chemical resistance, such as polyurethane or polyaspartic coatings.

So on many industrial floors the epoxy is not the layer you walk on at all. It is the layer holding the system to the slab, with a tougher and more UV-stable topcoat above it. That matters in areas with daylight, because epoxy chalks under UV, and in areas with heavy chemical exposure or vehicle abrasion.

How to read a floor specification

A system, not a product. A proper specification names each layer:

  1. Slab preparation standard, whether grinding, shot blasting or acid etching
  2. Crack and defect repair
  3. Primer, with its type and solids content
  4. Body coats, with the number of coats
  5. Topcoat, chosen for the actual exposure in that area
  6. Additives, such as anti-slip aggregate where it is needed

If a quote gives a price per square foot and the word “epoxy”, ask for this breakdown before comparing it with anything.

What the finished system gives you

Seamless and easy to clean with a mop and light detergent. Hard, durable and wear-resistant under vehicle traffic. Customizable in color and pattern. Slip resistant where anti-slip additives are specified. Available in low or no VOC formulations. Fast curing, with curing times that can be adjusted for cold or hot applications.

What Our Customers Say

"We had an audit coming up and we really wanted to make sure our facility was clean and ready. Recoveron was able to fit us into their schedule with little notice. Mark the Project Manager and his team were friendly and easy to work with. His team worked with us to make sure the equipment was cleaned properly and up to our companies standard. If we had any issues, which was were very few they took care of it right away. We will be working with Recoveron again in the future and possibly setting up a routine cleaning schedule."

Nathan Novolex Sheilds Shawano, WI

"Everyone did what was expected, and the industrial crew was friendly and professional."

Chris Tiruna/ Fosber America Green Bay, WI

"Our 30+-year-old machining company was in dire need of professional cleaning, especially after the installation of 3 new large boring mills and an open house just around the corner! The walls and floor were covered in layers of grease, oil, and coolant. I had several local cleaners in to review and quote the project…. all declined; it was outside of their capability, and they wouldn't touch it.

After calling Recoveron, I could sense they had seen it all before. Their team came out to review and quote the project….. didn't even blink an eye… they could do the job, NO PROBLEM! Plus, they would work during the Off Shift so that we could continue to produce product for our customers. They coordinated the lifts and equipment, and the crew went to work over ten days, meeting with the shop foreman daily to coordinate a plan each night and setting the direction for ease and efficiency for both Recoveron and Lighting Machine. The crew was respectful, detailed, and systematic and took pride in their work; they treated our machine shop as if it were their own home.

The project cost was fair and reasonable, and we intend to engage Recoveron regularly to keep the shop in Tip-Top shape. I have already recommended other companies in our industry to give them a call!
It has been a delight to work with Recoveron; the results are dramatic and far exceeded our expectations!"

Mary Lightning Machine Holland, MI

"Recoveron has been with us through AIB certification to becoming SQF certified. They do pre-inspections to determine the scope of work and provide on-sight documentation. Once the work is completed, they furnish the needed information for inspections.

For the past six years, they have provided plant cleaning and coatings for our Wisconsin facility and now are working at our Minnesota location. Recoveron is a knowledgeable and reliable resource that I would recommend to any manufacturer!"

Brandon N.E.W. Plastics Corp. Minneapolis, MN

"We had some heavy dust/oil build-up on our Fresh Air intakes and Exhaust fans at the 30-foot ceiling left. Recoveron came in, blocked off the area, brushed and vacuumed the areas, and cleaned the floors when done.

Their group cleaned and painted a control room exterior and even cleaned and painted a workstation and safety barrier. They look very good.

Part of the group worked on the back wall behind the machinery, brushing and vacuuming it, making it look 100% better.
Thank you very much."

Charles Great Northern Corporation Appleton, WI

"OMG! Should have been done years ago. Made our Mill shine! Very professional and thorough."

Holly Door County Cooperative DBA Shirley Feed Mill Sturgeon Bay, WI

"The Recoveron Services Team did an outstanding job on our project. Quick response and superb attention to detail - we are very pleased with the results."

Luke Landscape Structures Inc Delano, MN

"I have passed on this information to others within Republic Services."

Mark Republic Services Melrose Park, IL

"Recoveron is always a pleasure to work with. They come in and get the work done, and it always looks fantastic when they are done."

Mert Baytek ent Pulaski, WI

"I was very satisfied with the job that was done from Recoveron. The crew stayed busy I didn't have to watch over them like I have in the past with other companies. The last day they were here it was close to quitting time for the guys and I told then they could leave but they insisted on doing another job I had on my list before they did. I was really impressed by this and I will defiantly be using Recoveron again."

Anthony Suominen Green Bay, WI

"Recoveron was a great choice for the room we needed cleaned. It had diesel soot and oil caked on (walls, ceiling and floor) for over 15 years and their team has it spotless. One of the biggest comments we have received from our employees is that "It doesn't even look like the same room". Their service was timely, very easy to schedule, and customer service was amazing. Would strongly recommend using Recoveron for future projects here and to anyone in need of any of their services."
