Planning a Floor Project Around Traffic

Every surface in a plant can be worked on while the building operates, with one exception. You can contain a wall, cover a machine and work overhead above a running line. You cannot work on a floor that people and vehicles need to be standing on.

That single constraint is why floor projects get deferred for years, and why planning them properly is most of the job.

Zone the building

The workable approach is almost always to divide the floor into sections and take them out of service one at a time, rather than treating the whole area as one project. Zoning lets the operation keep functioning at reduced capacity instead of stopping.

The zones should follow how the building actually works. Aisles that are the only route to a dock cannot be done at the same time as the dock. Areas serving a single line can often be done during that line’s own downtime.

Cure times set the calendar

This is the part that surprises people. Application is fast; return to service is not. A coated floor typically takes foot traffic before it takes vehicle traffic, and the interval between those two is often the longest single item in the schedule.

Ask for both numbers before the plan is fixed: when can people walk on it, and when can a loaded forklift drive on it. Both move with temperature and humidity, so a cold or damp week extends them.

Prepare first, and properly

A coating only lasts as long as the slab preparation underneath it. That means grinding, shot blasting or acid etching to create a surface the coating can grip, then cleaning, then priming. A floor coating laid over an unprepared slab delaminates at the traffic lines first, which is exactly where you will notice it.

Building this into the schedule properly is what stops a floor project needing to be done twice.

Sequence coating before striping

This sounds obvious and gets missed. If a floor is being coated and also needs safety striping, the coating goes down first and the striping goes on top. Doing it the other way means striping the floor, coating over it, and striping again.

Planning the two together means the floor comes out of service once instead of twice, which is usually a bigger saving than anything on the material line.

Weekends and shutdowns

Where zoning is not possible, weekend and shutdown windows can carry a floor project in stages. Each session has to end at a point where the area is safe and usable on the next working day, which means planning the zones around what can be completed and cured within the window.

What Our Customers Say

"OMG! Should have been done years ago. Made our Mill shine! Very professional and thorough."

Holly Door County Cooperative DBA Shirley Feed Mill Sturgeon Bay, WI

"Our building looks so much better and I appreciate all the hard work from your team."

Mike God's Pantry Food Bank Lexington, KY

"Having the same lead people has helped keep the quality of the work repeatable each time we schedule cleaning. Knowing they understand how we want the work to be accomplished and where they need to be is nice, and it makes managing the overall site work much easier on a busy down day. Safety awareness is very good. We do not allow a contractor to work in our facility that does not always take safety first."

Anonymous Fitesa Green Bay, WI

"It is obvious the crew takes pride in their work. Arrived on time, did a great job, and finished in the estimated time given on a tight timeline."

Ben McDonald Services Green Bay, WI

"We have utilized Recoveron for several painting and cleanup projects, with commendable work done each time. All projects, from the initial evaluation/quote to completion, have been successful with little intervention. We look forward to continuing business with Recoveron in the future! Great group of people!"

Jarrod Seneca Foods Corporation Janesville, WI

"After getting quotes from a few other companies, I chose Recoveron to perform cleaning of the ceilings, trusses, exposed piping, and walls in our production areas. We also needed additional cleaning performed around a printing press, which involved cleaning dust, chemicals, oils, and solvents. We had not cleaned these surfaces in years, and the build-up was quite heavy in some areas. Our facility has an upcoming audit scheduled for SQF certification, and it was very apparent that Andy knew exactly what needed to be done to pass the audit.

The crew arrived on time each day and did a fantastic job! They had to maneuver around many pallets and areas with little clearance. Watching the workers as they drove the boom lifts, it was evident that they were fully trained, took every safety precaution, and knew what they were doing. They never complained; they just adapted to the situation. There was clear communication between myself and the project manager, and the crew lead did a walk-thru with me at the start of each shift to ensure things were being done to my satisfaction. The price was reasonable for the magnitude of work we needed, and I am completely happy with the outcome. I would definitely recommend Recoveron!"

Patti Color Ink Sussex, WI

"They were very flexible to accommodate many schedule changes, and still accomplish according to the timelines. Everything done on time and according to the expectation."

Tiago Barry Callebaut USA LLC Chicago, IL

"The Recoveron crew was on-time, hard working, and did a great job!"

Peter Fabick Cat Milwaukee, WI

“The Recoveron team arrived on time and prepared with all of the required personal protective equipment and food safety requirements in hand. Once onsite their team was extremely self motivated, driven, and required very little oversight from our facility's resources other than general check-ins. Overall we were very impressed with the overhead pipe cleaning service that they provide. I would highly recommend their cleaning crew to any manufacturing facility needing this type of service.”
